One of the struggles with being in a place with many needs is where to focus. We know that with the variety of needs in Myanmar, we must be careful to limit the ways that we offer support in order to be most effective in those programs. That said, sometimes we need to be flexible enough to offer support to people or organizations that need a one time, immediate donation. That is why we have funds set aside to be ready for this purpose.
A Roof and a Pig.
One trip, we were visiting a women living in a three house, rural town. Her husband had recently died and she did not have a any way to support herself. During our visit we asked if we could help and she expressed that she needed a new roof for her hut before the monsoon season arrived and pig to make a living. Her husband had provided the only family income but in her youth she worked at her family’s pig farm. In that moment, we realized the importance of having available funds for immediate needs. So, we set aside small portion of our money for that trip so we could provide her with a roof and a pig. This “roof and a pig” opportunity has arisen many times and because were are now prepared for it, we have been able to make a difference in people’s lives.
